In its early days, the University provided few jobs to the community. But as time went by, the decline in the numbers of ordained religious changed Notre Dame's employment profile. Today, fewer than five percent of the University's employees are priests, nuns, or brothers.

As Michiana's largest employer, Notre Dame plays a critical role in the region's economy.
