Notre Dame's Economic Impact
on South Bend

Contributing to Culture in South Bend

From the first time Father Sorin opened the doors of the campus museum, the University's scholarly assets and reputation have been open to the community. This tradition lives on in the Snite Museum, visited annually by hundreds of local school children.

Notre Dame's arts programs give the community the opportunity to enjoy events such as the Summer Shakespeare Festival, touring theatrical productions, and a range of instrumental and chorale performances. South Bend's Morris Performing Arts Center provides a taste of international-caliber, Notre Dame-sponsored presentations. Notre Dame's library collections give community members access to millions of volumes, while lectures bring the general public into the dialogue on campus.

  • The Snite Museum of Art welcomes all South Bend fifth graders for a tour and related art activities in the school year
  • Art camp provides art appreciation for "at-risk" youth every summer
  • Teachers as Scholars program enhances professional development for area schoolteachers
  • Specialty libraries in the University system include the Kresge Law Library and the Business Information Center
