Notre Dame's Economic Impact
on South Bend

Focus on Community Development

After Vatican II and the social revolution of the 1960s, community service emerged as a focus of spirituality. Today, Notre Dame's students, faculty, and staff enrich the city of South Bend and St. Joseph County region through volunteer efforts and support for charitable institutions. The extent of student volunteerism is extraordinary, with students donating 373,000 hours to local area organizations.

The Center for Social Concerns has organized students interested in building a stronger community. Notre Dame faculty have followed suit, instituting service projects such as the annual Tax Assistance Program, a chemistry class that investigates airborne lead contamination in households, and a program that pairs local architects and Notre Dame architecture students on urban revitalization projects.

  • 455,000 volunteer hours performed by students, faculty, and staff through community agencies
  • 85% of undergraduate students volunteer during their Notre Dame careers
